Culvert Installation: Landkey, Barnstaple

The Champion Groundworks team is delivering S278 and enabling works for a major new residential development at Acland Vale, Barnstaple, for Lovell Partnerships Ltd.
During its first phase, the development will deliver 381 new two- to five-bedroom homes and bungalows. Set within peaceful countryside yet just a short drive from Barnstaple’s shops, schools and amenities, Acland Vale will eventually deliver 820 new homes, alongside open spaces for community use and land allocated for future education and employment opportunities.
As part of the early phases of this scheme, our team installed a precast concrete box culvert as part of a ditch diversion beneath a new road crossing.
Key culvert features:
- Culvert opening: 1800 mm × 1200 mm
- Unit length: 1990 mm
- External dimensions: 2200 mm (W) × 1600 mm (H)
- Unit weight: 8.95 tonnes
- Total structure length: 34 m including headwalls
The installation included precast headwalls with integrated wing walls, designed to guide water flow and retain the embankment.
Due to their size, each headwall was delivered and installed in two separate sections, with each element weighing approximately 4.5 tonnes.
Once the foundation was prepared, the culvert units were positioned using our Doosan DX380LC excavator, which installed 15 precast culvert elements (approximately 9 tonnes each) safely and efficiently.
Thanks to the hard work of the team, excavation, inspections, foundation preparation, formwork, concrete pour and culvert installation were all completed in just 10 days.
