Project Update: Crewkerne

Find out more about the work we're doing on the long-awaited S278 works at Crewkerne.
We’re pleased to share that the Champion Groundworks team has recently started work on the long-awaited S278 works on Station Road, Crewkerne, for our valued client Taylor Wimpey.
This phase of work will create a new entrance road off Station Road, enabling the construction of a new link road connecting to a further new junction and subsequent S278 scheme off Yeovil Road.
We’ve teamed up with the expert team at Ground Stabilisation Solutions to utilise stabilisation methods that will help avoid more than 3,000 lorry movements through the centre of Crewkerne — reducing waste, cost, disruption and carbon impact for the local community.
The GSS team will reuse circa 30,000m³ of site-won fill to form a new embankment for the carriageway construction, before cement stabilising the top layer to create a sub-base replacement material.
We’re leaning on stabilisation more and more across our projects, and we’re delighted to be working with the GSS team to utilise stabilisation within the road formation on this scheme.
We hope this marks the beginning of many more projects across the South West where stabilised material is approved within road formations. It delivers what projects need in a more environmentally friendly way, while reducing disruption to local communities — a win for everyone.
