Welcome: Sam Voaden

Find out more about our new Quality & Development Specialist.

We were delighted to recently welcome Sam Voaden to the Champion Groundworks team as our new Quality & Development Specialist.

This is a new role within our growing Quality & Development team, headed up by Tom Smale in our Exeter office. The team is fully dedicated to the ongoing enhancement and development of our people, systems and processes, ensuring we continue to deliver best-in-class groundworks for our clients.

Sam is no stranger to Champion Groundworks. Through his previous role at NHBC, he worked closely with us conducting CQRs on our sites.

CQRs, or Construction Quality Reviews, are site-based reviews of construction quality, carried out by an NHBC expert to provide a comprehensive assessment of up to 38 build stages, or a focused review of specific areas. They are a voluntary initiative offered by NHBC for businesses that are genuinely committed to investing in quality development and continuously improving standards.

Champion Groundworks was proudly the first groundworks business in the region to voluntarily commit to working with NHBC on CQRs when they became available for groundworkers. Since then, they have become a core part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring we deliver the very highest standards of quality on every project we undertake.

Having worked closely with the Champion Groundworks team for the last few years through his role at NHBC, we feel very lucky that Sam has decided to join us.

Speaking about why he made the move, Sam said:

“I’ve always been really impressed by the level of focus and dedication that exists within Champion Groundworks when it comes to quality. There aren’t many businesses I’ve worked with where this focus is genuinely ingrained in everything they do. Champion’s proactive approach to quality has never felt like it is about anything other than a wholehearted and genuine dedication to continuous improvement for both their team and their clients — and in my experience, that is rare.”

Since joining us, Sam has been throwing himself into some of our current projects in Devon, spending time with our plot foundation gangs to gain a deeper understanding of what goes into creating plot foundations.

Talking about his experience so far, Sam said:

“My onboarding experience at Champion has been seamless. On day one, I arrived and everything was ready for me — my IT equipment, my vehicle and everything I needed to hit the ground running. I’ve joined plenty of much larger businesses and have never experienced such a seamless process as a new starter before.

“Working with the teams on the ground has been an eye-opening experience too. Seeing just how much work goes into creating the plot foundations I’m so used to assessing has given me a whole new perspective and appreciation for the care and attention that goes into delivering exceptional quality foundations.

“It’s honestly been a privilege to have this ‘work experience’ as part of my onboarding, as it’s not something I’ve had the chance to do before. All in all, I’ve loved my first few weeks and I’m really excited to get stuck into my new role as part of the Champion Groundworks team.”

We are beyond delighted to have you join the Champion Groundworks family, Sam, and we look forward to seeing what you’ll achieve as part of our Quality & Development team.
